My daughter has taken a physician suggested med vacation for the past five years and as a result grows an average of 1 to 2 sizes in the summer. If she is having an especially difficult day (usually if she eats something that she shouldn't have), she'll take a short acting med, otherwise she takes various supplements and engages in activities to help improve executive functioning and bolster neurotransmitters. So far, it's been working and she has great fun at camp with her friends. She turns 10 in June and was diagnosed at age five.

So for anyone who is considering a med vacations, doing so doesn't mean gloom and doom.

I like the summer contract idea. For spring break, we took the time to discuss what my daughter would like to do and it turned out well. She was cognizant of what I needed to accomplish and we balanced these needs.
